Why it’s Important to Use Galvanized Nails in Treated Wood - Image

Pressure-treated lumber is great for outdoor projects because it is resistant to rot and insects which is why we use it for our grade board and post bases. But, it’s important to use materials that are especially specifically designed for use with treated wood, including galvanized nails.

Standard steel nails will rust and corrode from exposure to moisture, from both the exterior elements and the chemicals in pressure-treated lumber. Galvanization is the process of coating the metal with a layer of zinc, which helps protect the nail from corrosion and improves its durability. This process allows galvanized nails to withstand exposure to moisture and other elements that could cause rust or structural failure.

Additionally, using galvanized nails also helps prevent staining or discoloration of your treated wood. Unlike regular steel nails, galvanized ones won’t leave behind unsightly marks even if exposed to wet conditions, allowing you to keep your project looking fresh for years to come!

The other important factor to consider is using ring shank nails for your pole barn construction.  These specially designed nails have a textured edge that helps them firmly grip into wood, making them great for nailing on floors, walls and other lumber that needs to withstand movement and wind forces. Ring shank nails provide a 288% greater pull-out resistance than smooth shank nails, meaning your project will stay secure over time.

Your Milmar building will be framed with only ring shank nails or screws, and galvanized nails or exterior-grade screws will be used for all exposed (pressure-treated) lumber.

Additionally, with your roof being one of the most important pieces of your building, we use GRK or CTX structural lag screws for maximum roof strength and integrity.  Our buildings have been thought through from start to finish and we don’t cut costs on things like fasteners.   They may seem insignificant, but they play a vital role in keeping your building standing strong for a lifetime and beyond!  Contact us today if you want to get a free quote started.

So if you’re planning on doing some construction work around your house with treated or exterior wood, consider using galvanized ring shank nails.  They will help ensure your project lasts longer and endures whatever nature throws at it!   And if you are looking to maximize your framing structure, structural screws are significantly stronger than lag bolts, but with the ease of driving a (large) screw.
