How to Keep Spring Pests Out of Your Pole Barn - Image

Battling pests and insects are an annoying reality for pole barn owners.

Here are a few ways to combat these pesky intruders:

Rodents — Did you know that small rodents (like mice, rats or chipmunks) are the culprits in over 25% of all farm fires of unknown origin? Why do you ask? Because they are privy to using their teeth on just about any material they encounter, wiring getting chewed on causes sparks to fly. And when sparks meet debris, fires happen quickly.

Like many nocturnal scavengers, rodents will do anything in their power to obtain food. Because your barn has so many tasty food options, it’s essential to store everything in plastic containers with tight lids and locks. That way, the smell remains enclosed.

Having a barn cat or two can help control the population as well. Because rodents are so sneaky, they might already be burrowing in between your walls and in haystacks. In fact, hay is a very popular location for a mouse to give birth and raise their young. Keeping a barn cat healthy with proper vaccination can ensure it’s doing its part to patrol the area.

Raccoons and opossums are also problematic. Use the same preventative measures as you would smaller rodents to remove them from your barn. Corralling these pests is far more difficult than their smaller counterparts. Calling an exterminator, setting a trap or shooting an animal are your best options. But be sure to release the animals far away to prevent a sneaky return to your barn.

Beyond rodents eating your animal’s food and destroying your building, they also carry horrible diseases that can spread to your livestock. These creatures can be very problematic if you have a chicken coop, too.

Flies

To prevent a fly infestation, be sure to keep your windows sealed and your doors closed to prevent bugs from entering your barn as well. Keeping a clean barn, setting flytraps and using synthetic flytrap catchers can help without hurting your animals.
